One of his followers murmured agreement, but another quietly slipped away. Now there was Norton and four others. Maybe that wasn't so bad. Christ Himself could only find twelve.

About This Quote

The story of Christ's disciples meeting on the road to Emmaus is one of the most well-known Bible stories. It recounts how the disciples had spent the previous evening listening to Christ, Who had risen from the dead, talk with them about the things He had done and said before His death. When they arrived in Emmaus early in the morning, they asked each other if all had really happened as they remembered it. Then, after sharing refreshments, one of them, named Cleopas, said that he was still not sure that he had properly understood what Christ had told them. The group decided to go to Jerusalem for a few days to get more information on everything they had heard and seen.

As they were traveling on their way to Jerusalem, they met others who had heard all about what Jesus did. They talked with them and discovered that what they had heard was true. "But," Cleopas said, "how did it happen that the Scriptures could say nothing of this? I have seen Him with my own eyes." Cleopas was referring to a text in Luke 24:44–46: And it came to pass, when He was in Bethelem [which is near Jerusalem], that He was going out to [his] Father; and there were some [Jews] with Him [His followers], and [some] [Jews] leading [them].

And when He [Jesus] saw them [the Jews who followed Him], He was moved with compassion for them, and He began to speak to [them], saying: "How often I desired in the days gone by to eat this Passover with you before I suffered," (but now having no room for one in prison). "But," answered He [Jesus], "when heretofore you cast out demons in My name by the finger of men and these things you did which were not good but made Me suffer these things ..." The answer Jesus gave this man was simple: “Don’t bother remembering!” His followers should simply believe that God cares about them and wants what’s best for them–and then just do what God asks them to do.
